Unforgivable Sin

Oscar Wilde said every Saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.

“An unforgivable sin is described in Mark 3 and Matthew 12. These passages involve Jesus Christ’s repeated and widespread public defeat of Satan and his demons. Many readers and theologians have been confused about the true nature of this sin. The purpose of Jesus Christ’s ministry was to directly confront darkness with the light of truth in a public battle of pure good versus pure evil. The only being in the universe that is more powerful than the Evil One is God. He is the only one with enough power to bind Satan himself and forcibly dispossess him.” (Taylor, 2002)

Mark 3:22-30 states,  “And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebub,’ and, ‘By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.’ …‘Assuredly, I [Jesus] say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation;’ because they said, ‘He has an unclean spirit’” In Matthew 12:31-32Jesus says to the Pharisees,  “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come”.

The unforgivable or unpardonable sin was or is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told the people and the Pharisees that all sin is forgivable except for this particular sin. This blasphemy is unique and will never be forgiven. The Pharisees accused Jesus of being possessed by a demon, which allowed Him to work miracles. The Pharisees refused to admit the truth about Jesus and talked ugly and cursed the Holy Spirit, which allowed Jesus to heal the sick and lame. It was the fact that the Pharisees knew that Jesus was real and still condemned him that caused Jesus to pronounce this sin as unforgivable. A person must ask if they have committed an unforgivable sin or even if they have the power or authority to commit this sin. The Bible does not specifically state that a true Christian can be guilty. A person would have to be completely defiant of Christ, completely reject God, and abandon and renunciate all religious or political beliefs. This would be extremely difficult in today’s society. The unforgivable sin is not an accident or mistake. It amounts to a direct and intentional attack on all things good and decent about Jesus and God. It is said that such an attack would result in God refusing repentance and cause the hardening of that person’s heart.

We are no longer under the rule of the Pharisees and do not have a religious system that oversees our daily beliefs and faith. We cannot duplicate the actions that the Pharisees committed. The closest sin we can be guilty of that would result in an unforgivable situation is rejecting Christ and remaining an unbeliever. Genesis 6:3 warns that man’s time is limited and that the Holy Spirit shall not always be with man. There is no repentance or forgiveness after a person’s time is up. If a person chooses not to have a relationship with Jesus/God, he has removed themselves from the only source of forgiveness. A very costly and wrong decision that will affect that person’s eternity.
